Born and raised along the Blue Ridge Mountains in Lynchburg, Virginia. Family roots trace back to the early 19th century in the Shenandoah Valley. Undergraduate studies in geology and mathematics at James Madison University, Harrisonburg Virginia. Graduate studies in geology at the University of Michigan. Joined the faculty of (I)PFW in the fall of 1994.
