Jiangshan An is an Assistant Professor at the Department of English and Linguistics. She completed her PhD in Applied Linguistics at the Department of Education, University of Oxford, the UK, where she also taught on the master’s program in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. Prior to her PhD, she obtained her English language teacher certification in Hong Kong, where she taught English language arts, academic English, IELTS and TOFEL at the secondary school level and university level. During her time in the UK, she consulted for a bilingual kindergarten project which is part of the GREAT Early Years Trade Mission to China sponsored by the British Government’s International Department of Trade. On this role, she developed a curriculum guide for effective bilingual education for early years. She also served as a Principle Investigator on a project commissioned by the Oxford University Press (OUP) to review research on bilingual education in South America, which produced a report that was used in OUP's evaluation of the South America market.
She has published in prominent journals in applied linguistics with major publishers, including Language Teaching Research, System, Language Teaching, Studies in Second Language Learning and Teaching, Linguistics and Education, Journal of Immersion and Content-Based Language Education and Oxford University Press etc. She has also presented in a number of major applied linguistics conferences, e.g. the American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL) Annual Conferences, the World Congress of Applied Linguistics (AILA),the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Annual Conferences, the European Second Language Association (EuroSLA) Annual Conferences, the British Educational Research Association (BERA) Annual Conferences etc. She is a member of the American Association of Applied Linguistics. She has also served as a reviewer for numerous top tier journals in language education.
Based on her expertise on language acquisition and classroom interaction, she has been invited as a collaborator for a large scale three million dollar US Department of Education project 'Project CELEBRATE: Cultivating Equitable Learning Environments, Building Readiness, Advancing Teacher Education', led by IUPUI. This project aims to improve teacher training about multilingual learners in K-6 classroom settings in Indiana.
