Jose Thekkiniath is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University Fort Wayne. He received his B.S. in Agriculture (2001) from Kerala Agricultural University, India, M.S. in Microbiology from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (2003), and Ph.D. in Biology (2013) from Texas Tech University.
Jose’s research focuses on human babesiosis, a malaria-like tick-borne infectious disease caused by parasites belonging to the genus Babesia and has been pervading globally. Major goal of his research program is to understand biology and pathogenesis of Babesia parasites including Babesia microti and B. duncani. His research focuses on understanding immune responses to Babesia infections. He is also interested in developing anti-babesial therapeutics and diagnostic markers. In addition to his research on babesiosis, Jose is interested in investigating the virulence mechanism of the chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis which has been implicated in global amphibian decline.
