Dr. Mieko Yamada is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at PFW. Her specializations are the Sociology of Education, Race and Ethnicity, Sociology of Language, and East Asian Studies with an emphasis on Japan. Her publications have appeared in national and international peer-reviewed journals in the field of language studies, language education, and applied sociology.
Dr. Yamada is an international sociologist who has been professionally trained in three different countries (Japan, Canada, and the United States). She has a strong interest in examining how individual lives and identities are shaped by local and global forces and also how social inequalities are created in the process of globalization. In addition to her interests in global contexts, she engages in community-based projects, including research projects of Afghan immigrants and refugees in Fort Wayne, IN.
