Enhanced Summer and Hybrid Work Schedules

May 19, 2023
Dear Colleagues,

Employee engagement, satisfaction, and belonging have been central to the Quality of Life initiatives and conversations that have been taking place as part of the strategic planning process during the past year.

Purdue Fort Wayne’s leadership team continues to explore ways to enhance the campus work environment for faculty and staff, while also ensuring the delivery of essential services and support for our students, campus visitors, and the broader university community.

In response to your suggestions and input, I’m pleased to announce that Purdue Fort Wayne will implement a new summer work schedule, as well as additional opportunities for hybrid work, for faculty and staff beginning at the end of this month.

Both the summer and hybrid flexible work schedules will begin on Monday, May 29, and end on Friday, August 11. The university will resume normal business/office hours on Monday, August 14.

Summer Work Schedules

The summer work schedule is based on a four-and-a-half-day work week:

  • Monday through Thursday will be nine-hour workdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with a half-hour lunch) or 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (with a one-hour lunch). Friday hours will be 8 a.m. to noon with no lunch break.
  • The university will be open for regular business for both external customers and internal operations Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.
  • Employees should work with their supervisor to define their work schedules.
  • Note that employees involved in New Student Orientation will need to work a modified schedule on Friday, June 16, in order to fully serve new students and their families. Consult with your supervisor regarding your schedule.
  • An exception will be made for employees who need to maintain the existing Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. work schedule. Please consult with your immediate supervisor.

Holiday and vacation hours will be adjusted as follows during the summer schedule:

  • University holidays for full-time staff will be calculated at nine hours per day (Memorial Day and Independence Day).
  • Paid time off (scheduled vacation days, sick days, and personal business days) for full-time staff will be calculated at nine hours per day for Mondays through Thursdays and four hours per day on Fridays.
These calculations will be made automatically in Success Factors. Likewise, if you have already scheduled paid time off during this time, the calculations will automatically adjust in Success Factors.

Hybrid Work Schedules

In addition to the new summer work schedule, academic and administrative units may also continue their current hybrid work schedules this summer. Units also have the flexibility to modify hybrid schedules to provide additional opportunities for remote work, as feasible and appropriate. Employees should work with their immediate supervisor for approval.

Final decisions on hybrid work schedules will be made by direct reports to the chancellor for each of their respective areas.

Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication throughout the year. We hope this flexibility with summer work schedules provides each of you with opportunities to be more productive while achieving more balance with work-life demands.

Sincerely,

Ron Elsenbaumer
Chancellor
