Early Music Concert A Courtesan, A Nun, and A Court Musician

Rhinehart Recital Hall

Celebrating women composers of the 17th- and 18th-century Europe, the concert begins in the first half of the seventeenth century with two pieces of Italian stile modern: Barbara Strozzi’s heart-wrenching cantata “Lagrime Mie” followed by a fiery sonata composed by Italian nun Isabella Leonarda. The program continues with two compositions by French composer Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre: an elegant dance suite for solo harpsichord and a monumental sacred cantata, Esther, which showcases both instrumental brilliance and dramatic vocal pyrotechnics.
