FOCUS ON BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Anxiety and Depression: Exercise, Brain Teasers, and EAP

The Healthy Boiler Pillar of Wellness for May focuses on behavioral health and the theme of mental health. Each day you may experience a variety of stressors and situations which may make you feel anxious or depressed momentarily. By examining your feelings, stressors, and symptoms, you can develop strategies to manage or alleviate these feelings and symptoms.

Here are some strategies to empower your mind:

  • Go outside for a walk especially in nature. Look around as you walk, listen to the sounds you hear, and pay attention to the scents you smell. Staying in the present moment can give your mind a chance to stop thinking about stressors and can help you refocus.
  • Make changes in your lifestyle such as getting more sleep, cutting back on sugar, eating more fruits and vegetables, and more. Need additional support to make a change in habits? Visit the Employee Well-being website for workshops and personal health coaching.
  • Take the Brain Teaser Challenge in May. Exercise your mind for 10 minutes a day for 30 days. Examples include Sudoku, Word Games, Cross word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and more. Any activity that exercises your brain through problem solving, memorization, attention building skills, and more.

But what happens if feelings of anxiety or depression stick around even after you've taken steps to manage the symptoms? Your Employee Assistance Program provides counseling to support benefits-eligible employees and their covered family members for a number of concerns. Visit the HR website to learn more.
