FOCUS ON Physical health
Allergies and Asthma
Physical health, the Healthy Boiler Pillar for June, focuses on allergies and asthma. Allergies and asthma may develop at any age. They often occur together, especially if there is a family history of allergies.
You may have allergies which trigger asthma flare-ups, so not only would you experience the symptoms of the allergy, but also the symptoms of asthma as well when you are exposed to the allergen(s). For example, if you are allergic to pollen and you go outside, you may experience a runny nose, itchy eyes from your allergy, but you might also feel chest tightness, difficulty breathing like you can't get enough air, or wheezing. This could indicate that you have allergic asthma which is reacting to the pollen allergy.
The key to living with allergies and asthma is managing them and following the best plan of treatment for you and your lifestyle.
Tips to help manage allergies and allergic asthma:
- Be aware of what triggers your symptoms.
- Consider allergy testing by a specialist in allergy and asthma care.
- Limit your exposure to or avoid the allergen.
- Check airborne pollen count and air quality daily on weather apps or local news weather forecasts.
- Manage your allergies to help allergic or seasonal asthma.
- Determine the cause of your asthma to help you control it and prevent asthma attacks.
