Purdue University Fort Wayne launching first-of-its-kind master’s degree in Indiana

A Fort Wayne college campus is preparing to launch the state’s first master’s degree in applied physics.

Purdue University Fort Wayne graduate students may begin pursuing the academic credential in the fall following recent Indiana Commission for Higher Education approval.

The program will offer an option well-suited for area high school educators wanting certification to teach dual-credit physics classes. Such courses allow students to earn high school and college credits simultaneously.

Commission documents said this first-of-its-kind degree in Indiana will be offered in person through the physics department within the university’s College of Science. The campus plans to add two full-time faculty members.

Ronald Friedman, College of Science dean, described the new offering as a significant addition.
