Materials Science program underway at Purdue University Fort Wayne
FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The Materials Science Program in the Department of Physics at Purdue University Fort Wayne is about halfway through its first semester, and indications are it will be growing in the future.
“Adding this program is a response to area needs,” says Mark Masters, chair and professor in the Department of Physics.
Many industries in northeast Indiana depend on hiring employees with the knowledge and understanding of materials, such as the biomedical, metallurgical, and aerospace industries.
“This is a multidisciplinary program that includes chemistry, math, polytechnic, as well as physics courses,“ added Masters. “It teaches our students how to analyze materials and then how to make them or develop new materials. We first teach our students the conceptual understanding of a material so they can create a mental image of how something looks and functions, before they figure out the details of how it actually works.”
He noted that while the first class of students is small, he expects it to grow as the program matures.
