PFW Hosts Workshop to Help Teachers Teach about the Holocaust

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Purdue University Fort Wayne’s Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (IHGS) and the School of Education, in collaboration with the Anti-Defamation League’s “Echoes & Reflections” program, is hosting a day-long Holocaust Education Teachers Workshop, Sunday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Purdue University Fort Wayne in Neff Hall, Room 233.

Organizers say the hope of this collaborative workshop is to provide area educators with the instructive skills to teach about the Holocaust and genocide. Benjamin Kearl, interim assistant director of the IHGS and a visiting assistant professor of education, added, “We hope that this workshop will provide a springboard for continuing to develop Holocaust and genocide education that is responsive to the students, teachers, and communities of northeast Indiana. Area teachers taking part in the workshop is the first step toward ensuring the success of this goal.”

Throughout this past year, the IHGS and the School of Education asked area teachers how they teach the Holocaust. Their responses show a healthy commitment to accurately teaching about it. They also suggest the possibility of expanding local Holocaust and genocide instruction. It is this possibility that is the motivating reason behind the May 12 workshop.

Teachers who are interested in attending the free workshop can register here. Registration closes Friday. May 3.
