Anthropology Club Lunchtime Lecture Series Presents:
Chimu-Era (AD 1000 - 1450) Child Sacrifices from Pampa la Cruz, Huanchaco, Peru
Dr. Richard Sutter, Ph.D
In recent years, hundreds of Chimú-Era child sacrifices have been discovered from a variety of locations nearby to the Chimú’s capital – Chan Chan – by the Programa Arqueológico Huanchaco, These include 22 children from Pampa la Cruz-Monticulo 1, Episode 3 (~AD 1220 – 1300), and another 39 individuals from Pampa la Cruz-Monticulo 2 (est ~AD 1000) that were excavated during the summer of 2022 which I studied this past summer. Here I discuss the results of biological relatedness analyses for the children from these contexts, and then consider the implications of my results as they relate to the Chimú Empire’s expansion and its ritual expressions of power and dominance over conquered peoples.
