Drumming for Unity and Healing: South Africa’s Volmoed Youth Drummers
Rhinehart Recital Hall
The Volmoed Youth Drumming Project from Hermanus, South Africa, is comprised of young men and women from Zwelihle and Mount Pleasant townships, some of the most impoverished in South Africa. These young people learn how to make drums out of discarded pallets and then play, entertain, and derive income from the drums they create. Join us to see how this creative endeavor empowers these young people psychologically and emotionally, as we explore with them how the healing properties of music have supported their stress management, resiliency, and well-being. Sponsored by the Indiana Center for Middle East Peace, College of Visual and Performing Arts, School of Music, and the School of Education.
