Bitternut Hickory
Description
The bark of older trees is tight, with long, narrow, interlacing ridges. The winter buds are sulfur yellow. The nuts are bitter and astringent, with a high tannin content, and their husks are winged at the joints. The close-grained and shock-resistant wood is used for tools.
