Black Walnut

Description
Black walnut is one of the largest and most valuable trees of Indiana’s forests. Its dark wood is used for fine furniture. The nuts are flavorful, with a unique pungency, and have a hard shell with a nonsplitting husk. Compound leaves have 15 to 25 leaflets. The bark is dark brown and deeply furrowed. The black walnut can reach a height of 100 feet. Hydrojuglone, a chemical found in plant parts, often inhibits growth of other plants in the soil surrounding these trees.
