Chinkapin Oak
Description
Chinkapin oak is a white oak type found on dry limestone outcrops and alkaline soils. Its leaves have coarse, gland-tipped teeth and are downy on lower surface. The cap encloses one-fourth to one-half of the acorn, which are sweet and eaten by several wildlife species. The now-extinct passenger pigeon readily fed on nuts from this tree.
