Eastern Cottonwood
Description
One of the largest trees of the Indiana forests, the eastern cottonwood can be extremely fast growing under favorable conditions. It typically grows on low ground near streams, but can be used in revegetation of strip-mine areas. The ”cotton” that fills the air along rivers in late spring acts to disperse the seeds. Leaf stems, or petioles, are flattened, as with the quaking and bigtooth aspen.
