Eastern Redbud

Description
A small tree (up to 30 feet in height) with heart-shaped leaves, the eastern redbud’s red-purple flowers open very early in the spring, creating a haze of color in the bare woods. Flat, three-inch-long pods hang on the tree into winter. The bark of older trees is scaly and reddish brown. A form with white flowers occurs rarely in Indiana.
