It is a member of the custard-apple family, Annonaceae, though all other members of this family are tropical. Winter buds are flattened, silky hairy, and without bud scales. The crushed foliage has a green pepper smell. Named varieties have been selected that produce consistent fruit crops. Its flowers are deep maroon in color.
