Persimmon

Description
The bark of these trees have an “alligator hide,” scaly look. The persimmon thrives on poor soil, and suckers can grow from surface roots to form persimmon thickets. Its fruits ripen from August into early winter but are very astringent until after a frost, when they become quite delicious—an important wildlife food. Wood is used for golf-club heads.
