White Oak

Description
Widespread across eastern North America, the white oak is also found throughout Indiana, except around Lake Michigan. White Oak is pyramidal when young, large and imposing, with wide-spreading branches when mature. The leaves are whitish below and have five to nine rounded lobes. The acorn cap has raised bumps rather than smooth scales and encloses one-fourth to one-third of the acorn. Acorns provide food for many wildlife species. The growth is very slow, but it is an important timber tree, as the wood is of high value.
