Types of scholarships
International scholarships support students who study, work, or conduct research abroad. While at PFW, you can apply for the Gilman, which awards up to $5,000 to support a semester or year of study abroad (deadlines in OCTOBER and MARCH). The Critical Language Scholarship (deadline in NOVEMBER) or Boren (deadline in JANUARY) support foreign language study. Seniors and recent alumni can apply for Fulbright scholarships to support a year of study, teaching, or research (deadline in OCTOBER).
The Goldwater Scholarship offers up to two years of tuition support for STEM undergraduates who intend to pursue a graduate research degree (deadline in JANUARY). Seniors or recent graduates applying for research PhDs can apply for the Hertz Scholarship, which supports up to five years of graduate study. The DAAD Rise program offers summer internships in Germany to STEM students (German language not required) (deadline in DECEMBER).
If you have a strong record of leadership and service, the Truman Scholarship is for you! It funds graduate work in a public service field. If you have a background in international relations or politics and have always dreamed of working in Washington DC, check out the Carnegie Endowment Junior Fellows Program. This is a paid internships program. Fellows work as research assistants at the renowned Carnegie Endowment. Future teachers can apply for the Madison Junior Fellowship. The Voyager Scholarship is a new opportunity, funded by the Obama Foundation. It supports students interested in public service to attend a summer workshop.
These opportunities support students with unique backgrounds or interests. The AIGA Worldstudio Scholarships funds minority and economically disadvantaged students studying visual art and design. The Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship funds graduate study for members of underrepresented communities. The Soros Fellowship for New Americans support graduate study for students who are immigrants or whose parents are immigrants. The Udall Scholarship supports study of the environment, health care, and policy related to the Native American community.
